FAQs For Metal Grating Products

Jun. 10, 2022

A metal grating is a grid or metal lattice consisting of parallel support bars with cross bars or crimp bars used to space and keep the support bars upright. The grating provides a surface but allows air, light, heat, sound, and water to pass through.

Metal grating is strong and durable, has an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, and can be easily manufactured into virtually any configuration. Widely used in a variety of industrial and commercial applications, it is used as decking, walkways, ceilings, flooring, stair treads, gutter covers, and sunshades in factories, architectural decoration, and municipal projects.

Metal gratings can be custom fabricated or supplied in "stock panels", and Xinghong offers a variety of sizes, spacings, thicknesses, surfaces, and finishes depending on the application and load requirements. In some cases, regulatory standards may require metal floor grating. It is a reliable, proven industrial flooring product because it can withstand heavy equipment, rolling loads, and pedestrian traffic.

What materials are used to make grating?

Many different materials can be used for grating, including carbon steel alloys, aluminum, and stainless steel. Each material has specific advantages; carbon steel industrial floor grating is suitable for high traffic floor areas; aluminum grating is lightweight; corrosion-resistant and non-sparking, making it ideal for situations where strength-to-weight ratio is important, such as wastewater treatment plants. Stainless steel grating is used in areas with elevated temperatures and certain corrosive environments.

Metal grating is divided into two main categories according to its manufacturing process: bar gratings and safety gratings.

Bar Grating

Bar grating, also known as steel grating, is generally made up of parallel cross bars that are connected together with perpendicular bearing bars.

Safety Grating

Safety grating is a type of metal grating that is widely used on walking surfaces to improve traction and reduce the risk of slips and falls. It is generally made from a metal sheet that is perforated or cold stamped in a variety of patterns.

The common mesh size of welded steel gratings is 33 mm × 33 mm and 34 mm × 38 mm. According to the different load, place, use, method of application, and the requirements of the customer, there are different ways to divide grating mesh.

Load: The smaller the mesh, the higher the load capacity of the grating.

Application: Larger mesh allows more light to pass through. The smaller mesh prevents objects from falling off.

Customer: The shape and size of the mesh determine the optical perception of the grating.

What is banding?

The open ends of grating panels can be banded to provide additional transverse stiffness and an enhanced architectural appearance. Banding is especially important when grating panels are designed to be removable. If grating ends will be unsupported or grating will be subject to vehicular loads, banding can reduce impact stresses by transferring loads to adjacent bearing bars.

What is the span?

The distance between the support points of a grating, or the orientation of that dimension. It must always be measured parallel to the bearing bars.

Can you create custom bar grating?
